A Note from April: October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!

Howdy folks! Just a quick note...
I was interviewed last week by the Dallas Morning News as a follow up to their interview with Debra Gloria, regarding the "Underneath my Clothes" photo essay which is coming up on Oct. 8th. The reporter asked Debra to have me contact her because she wasn't sure I'd be comfortable speaking with her. She doesn't know me very well, does she? :) As I've said, I feel it is my responsibility to share my story. People talk about breast cancer all the time, but rarely do they discuss the details - I'd certainly never heard them. The most common topics people discuss are "surgery" as well as hair loss and illness resulting from chemo. But do they talk about the emotional challenges? Menopause? Heartburn? Scars? Prosthetics? Not as much. For me, so many things came as a surprise. Anyway, while talking to the reporter, I really enjoyed promoting the show coming up on October 8th and sharing some of my story with her.
As the month of October nears, my mind goes back to my diagnosis on October 26, 2010. I remember how it was so odd being diagnosed during breast cancer awareness month - how everywhere I turned retail stores were selling bracelets, necklaces, etc. putting their earnings towards Susan G. Komen or other organizations raising awareness and/or funds for a cure.
This October, I'll be doing my part, and you can too!!!
